Trump is again publicly playing with the idea of firing Robert Mueller, the special prosecutor leading the independent investigation into Russia’s election interference and potential ties to the Trump campaign, possible obstruction of justice, and related financial malfeasance. After it was recently reported Mueller subpoenaed the Trump Organization for documents related to Russia, Trump turned to Twitter with an onslaught of tweets attacking the investigation. Although Trump cannot fire Mueller himself, he can coerce someone in the Justice Department to do so, as he did with the firing of FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe. Attorney General Jeff Sessions fired McCabe 2 days before his official retirement under apparent pressure from the President.
Republicans in the House Intelligence Committee closed their investigation of Russia’s election tampering, stating they found no evidence of collusion, though Democrats on the committee emphatically state the opposite, citing the investigation was ended early without the testimony of key witnesses. Clearly, Republicans are doubling down on their loyalty to this troubled administration and are attempting to diminish, obscure or outright kill the investigations of Trump’s Russia ties. This obstructionism must be met with unequivocal commitment by Congress to let Mueller do his job. Without making clear that Trump will face legal and political consequences, they are giving Trump the green light to continue to abuse his power to obstruct and delegitimize Mueller’s investigation.
Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Lindsey Graham (R-SC) have introduced bipartisan legislation to limit Trump’s ability to fire Mueller, providing the investigation the protection it needs from an unpredictable president. As Mueller’s team pursues action against criminal perpetrators in the Russia investigation, every member of Congress must allow the legal process to proceed to its natural conclusion.
