CONDEMN THE PARDON OF RACIST SHERIFF JOE ARPAIO

Late on Friday, August 24th, while category 4 Hurricane Harvey barreled into Texas, Trump issued a presidential pardon of Joe Arpaio, former sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona. Earlier this year, Arpaio was convicted for defying a court order which barred his deputies from conducting “immigration round-ups” — racially profiling Hispanics and detaining them on suspicion of their legal status. He housed inmates in brutal, unhealthy conditions such as outdoor jails in sweltering heat and chain gangs. Women inmates were denied menstrual products and those mentally ill were targeted for abuse, leading to higher than average suicide rates in his jails.
